If you have priced up a website in South Africa recently, you have probably seen numbers all over the place: R999 here, R1,950 there, R5,500 somewhere else, and quotes running into five figures for anything with real functionality. None of those numbers are wrong. They are just answering different questions.

What actually drives the price

Three things move a web design quote more than anything else: how many pages you need, whether the content (words and images) is ready to go or needs to be written and sourced from scratch, and how much custom functionality is involved, like bookings, e-commerce, or member logins. A five-page brochure site with your own content is a different job to a twenty-page catalogue site with a shopping cart, and the price should reflect that honestly.

A lot of agency quotes also bundle in things that are not strictly "design": a year of hosting, a domain, copywriting, stock photography, and ongoing support. That is not a bad thing, but it does mean two quotes for what sounds like "the same website" can be R1,500 apart for reasons that have nothing to do with design quality.
